The FES office in Kabul was established in 2002. Our aim is to strengthen democratic institutions and civil society. The Foundation's work in Afghanistan focuses in particular on the exchange of ideas and discussion on the following topics: youth and politics, political participation of women and gender mainstreaming, conflict transformation and reconciliation, media and freedom of speech, strengthening civil society, parliamentary and provincal council and political party cooperation. more

Unemployment in Afghanistan could increase by 60 percent in 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. If peace should no longer be a pipe-dream, economic opportunities and equality have to be part of the deal.

Human rights in the Afghan peace process

The Afghan peace process is at a crossroads. Violence is escalating, human rights workers and civilians are targeted, and rights abuses are widespread. Afghanistan’s Independent Human Rights Commission, which continues to work under enormously difficult conditions, has a strong popular mandate and plays a key role in ensuring that any peace agreement will be worthy of the name.
